"Life is a Book" Lyrics Written by Joseph McDonald Dedicated to his brother Daniel (+9/16/2017) Am F C G A chapter starts, Am F C G And duties call. Am F C G The goals are set, Am F C G And a leader runs on. From foundations set, Much work is done. A life of faith, And achievements won. But it's not for us to know the end, Eternity may be just 'round the bend. (Chorus) So it's up to us to live this chapter well, To have gotten right up just as soon as we fell. Knowing we were generous in what we gave and took, So when it came time, we can close the book. The finish line is crossed, The Judge makes His choice. Now we watch and pray, For the sound of His voice. The pages have turned, Faster than we had foreseen. Now a soldier lays at rest, In the arms of his Queen. But it's not for us to know when the soul will take flight. It comes for us like a thief in the night. (Chorus) So it's up to us to live this chapter well, To have gotten right up just as soon as we fell. Knowing we were generous in what we gave and took, So when it came time, we can close the book… Life’s here, And life’s now gone. The body is still, But the soul lives on. (Chorus) So it's up to us to live this chapter well, To have gotten right up just as soon as we fell. Knowing we were generous in what we gave and took, So when it came time, we can close the book. Close the book… Close the book… Close the book… He's closed his book.

(Chorus...) (Verse 3) C C From big and dizzy mountain tops Am Am To death-like valleys low F F You’ve slapped adventure on the back G G And set our hearts aglow, C C You’ll recollect those golden days Am Am The fire, smoke, and song F That lowly loving kingdom yours G G Where the work continues on (Chorus...) (Verse 4) F C When we come to judgment seat, G Dm Where rivers meet their end, F C There may it be that we will hear G Dm The witness of a friend, F C There may it be that we will hear G C The witness of a friend.

"Charming Hats" Lyrics Farewell to you, my old friends, seems that we must part again; This road we’ve traveled for so long is coming to an end. Remember all the times we laughed, and all those merry days we’ve passed. We look at our old pictures and say: “My, it all went by so fast.” Chorus And all those charming hats are laid away – I hope they’ll be worn again someday. But until then we must pretend that we wear them every day. The candles burn for the last time; We have our rose petals and wine; Let every glass be filled once more, and every tear be dried. Chorus HmmmHmmmHmmm So let us raise our glasses high – and toast each other till they’re dry, With heavy hearts we’ll go our ways, but never question why. Farewell to you, my old friends… Farewell to you, my old friends… Farewell to you my old friends, seems that we must part again… And now our only hope is that, we will all meet in the end.

"Danny Boy" Lyrics Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling. 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow. 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow. Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. But when ye come, and all the flow'rs are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an ave there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be. For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

"Once More" Lyrics ~ for Daniel, with love from his proud father ~ Verse 1 When all the grains had fallen, The tears began to flow. Sorrow’s tide was rushing in, While we did all that’s hallowed. As the bay receives the setting sun, I see the empty hourglass, Which all the sand beneath my feet can’t fill To hear, “Dad, just one more cast?” Pre-chorus I do believe that reasons shape each shell I see. Still it’s hard to face the seasons we won’t share as memories. Chorus You now see a life that will never end, But as I stand here upon the shore, And watch the waves breaking, I find, My heart still is breaking, and aching, to see you once more. Verse 2 Pockets full of treasures, Along the beach we’d always find. How precious were sand dollars, And all our days at LBI! In my heart I’ll carry The many treasures left behind, From all the moments of a lifetime shared— How precious are such times! Pre-chorus I do believe that reasons shape each shell I see. Still it’s hard to face the seasons we won’t share as memories. Chorus You now see a life that will never end, But as I stand here upon the shore, And watch the waves breaking, I find, My heart still is breaking, and aching, to see you once more. Bridge How many hardships we must face, To reach the harbor past the stars, With each and every offered grace! And though we don’t see, hear, or know, All that Love has planned so wonderfully, We’ll arrive if we sail on, Through all the crosswinds and the calm, Under the Star of the Sea! Final Chorus You now see a life that will never end, But as we stand here upon the shore, And watch the waves breaking, we find, Our hearts still are breaking, And aching, to be together once more.

about

DEDICATION
This album is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Daniel J. McDonald, beloved son, brother, and friend, who died tragically in a car accident on September 16, 2017, the day after his oath ceremony in the Air Force ROTC at K-State as a scholarship cadet.

An award-winning musician and multi-instrumentalist, Daniel was giving back to others what he had received, especially to the young students he was teaching in Saint Marys, KS when he died.

ALBUM TITLE
The album title is from the song our son, Joseph, wrote for Daniel the week after his death. The album cover is an "Ex Libris" picture Daniel drew in Art class before he graduated.

ABOUT THE MUSIC
The music shared here is a collection of tunes and songs sung and played by Daniel with family and friends over the last six years. Three other original songs are included: one by Daniel, James and friends, one by Father Patrick McBride, and one by me for Daniel. I've included notes for each track and lyrics for the songs.

Most of the recordings on this album were done "live" without studio engineering, so you can experience the music as we did with Daniel--in real time, as his life unfolded at home, at church, at school, at campfires, at Fleadh competitions, or anywhere else the music took us.

OUR PRESENT JOURNEY
We will never get used to Daniel's absence. As our daughter, Jeanette, said in her "Letter to Daniel" at the wake, "your absence, Daniel, has made a hole in our hearts that will never go away...it is an incomparable sorrow to lose you...our most important lesson as a family will be to see this life through the eyes of God."

Incomparable sorrow, yes. And our hearts still are breaking. The grace of God strengthens and sustains us, as we continue to navigate the post-funeral journey.

We thank the good God for giving Daniel to our family 18 years ago and for the grace of his consecration to Our Lady, which he made at the age of 12. As we hold close all the treasured memories of his life, we will continue to pray for the repose of his soul.

THANK YOU
We are grateful to all those, near and far, who have reached out to bear the weight of grief with us. Thank you for loving Daniel with us in life and in death. Thank you for all the Masses and prayers for Daniel's soul. And thank you for the many different expressions of heartfelt sympathy and support for us, his family.

You have all lifted and carried the McDonalds through a very deep valley and have given us a strong and palpable example of what it means to bear one another's burdens (Gal. 6:2)--more powerful than any sermon on charity our family could ever hear.

This album is a small token of our sincere gratitude for the many kindnesses we have received from you, dear friends and relatives. May God bless you all 100-fold!

"With every carol (tune and song) that's played and sung
At Christmas this year,
Our hearts will sing, though they will miss,
The strings we still hear..."
(chorus from "Christmas Strings" --a new song...)
